ABOUT Chatham Island

Chatham is a tiny island part of the Andaman Group of Islands. The Island is part of the South Andaman administrative district in the Indian union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The island is located 3 km (2 miles) north of downtown Port Blair, the capital of the union territory. The tiny island connected with Port Blair by a Constructed Bridge over a stretch of sea-water. The Island is known for the Saw Mill which is one of the biggest and oldest in Asia.

This is the island where the earliest British settlement in the Andamans began. In 1883, the British established the Chatham Saw Mill, and later in 1990, a Museum was build which represents the local wood found on this Island, crafts by the Local Inhabitants, and the history of timber milling on the island. The Saw Mill and Museum is operated and maintained by the Directorate of Forest and Environment.
