ABOUT Baratang Island

Baratang Island at Andaman Island is about 100 kms away from Port Blair (capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands) with an approx area of 298 square kilometres. Baratang Island is also a gateway to Middle and North Andaman. Baratang Island is must see destination for tourist due to its virgin beauty and natural wonders. At Baratang Island one can see Mud Volcano, Mangrove, tropical forests, Parrot Island and only Limestone Caves at Andaman Islands.

As Baratang Island is an ideal destination to view widely spread Mangrove and Tropical forest but this island is mostly famous for Mud Volcano, Lime Stone Cave and Parrot Island.

Mud Volcano can only be seen at Andaman Island in and around India located at Baratang Island and Diglipur. Mud Volcano is used to refer as formations created by geo-exuded slurries (usually including water) and gases. Mud volcanoes are not true volcanoes as they produce no lava. Mud Volcano at Baratang Island is about 4 Kms from the Jetty (mini harbour) which locally names as Nilambur Jetty.

Lime Stone Cave at Baratang Island is an ancient cave which located around 30 minutes (by boat) away from Baratang Jetty. The journey to the Lime Stone Cave passes through the waters of the Baratang Creek, tiny islands and endless stretches of massive, primordial tropical forests bordered by unique Mangrove vegetations move up and down into view on either side. This Cave is formed through a huge deposit of Limestone, where some deposits are in the form of caves and the rest of it are in the form of layers or beds one upon the other. These deposits are either above the soil or under the ground (the underground portions from caves). There are more than 300 big and small deposits of limestone, out of which only one in the form of a cave is opened for the tourists. In the cave, massive limestone formations are dangled from the ceiling, glowed from the sides and sprouted from the ground.

Parrot Island at Baratang, Parrot Island is accessible by boat preferably at evening time during Sunset. During Sunset, when all the parrots are returning home is really a mesmerizing experience. To Visit Parrot Island the night stay at Baratang Island is Must.


The Ways to Reach Baratang Island :

We at Mountain Edge organize a Tour to Baratang Island on Private and Group basis. The Journey to Baratang Island by road passes through stunning tropical forest. The one-way journey by road is approx 3 hours and in between we need to halt at Forest Check Post. The Place of Check Out is known as Jirkatang. After the verification of vehicle document at Check Post, the vehicle is permitted to proceed forward on the basis of Convoy. The Convey leaves from Jirkatang Check Post four times in a day i.e. 6 am, 9 am, 12 pm and 2.30 pm only and last timing is 3.00 pm to return back towards Port Blair. Due to the timings of Conveys, the same day trip of Baratang starts at very early so we catch the first Convey towards Baratang Island at 6 am and cross the last Convey at 3 pm to return back to Port Blair and Hotel. The Convey passes through dense tropical reserved forest for 1 hour 30 minutes. During this 1 hour 30 minutes drive the still or video camera is strictly prohibited even mobile cameras too. After passing the convey the vehicle reach the Jetty (Middle Strait Jetty). From Middle Strait Jetty, the vehicle and travellers cross the sea by Vehicle Ferry. After crossing the sea the vehicle and travellers disembark at Baratang (Nilambur Jetty). That’s we reached Baratang Island and all sightseeing Mud Volcano, Mangrove, tropical forests, Parrot Island and Lime Stone Caves starts from this Point.

Upward Places of Middle and North Andaman like Kadamtala, Rangat, Mayabunder & Diglipur including Long Island will reachable and connected from Baratang Island.
